How it works
We have repurposed a card catalog cabinet and turned it into a seed library! The library is stocked with a limited variety of vegetable, flower, and herb seed packets. Anyone is welcome to come in and pick up seed packets of your choosing.
We also accept seed donations but they must come with the original packaging so we can copy the information and pass it along to the next person. Please see Reference staff for assistance.
The seed library is located at the Reference desk.
Why is the Newport Public Library starting a seed library?
Through our Seed Sharing program we hope to encourage the growing of vegetables and flowers from seed in home gardens by providing information and free seeds to the community and a place where seeds can be shared with others.
How do you source your seeds?
The seeds in our library were obtained through the URI Free Seed Program in partnership with Ocean State Job Lot stores from their unsold lot of Burpee™ seeds.
How many seed packets can I take?
You are welcome to take 1-3 packets or more.
Are the seeds genetically modified (GMO)?
From Burpee’s website: “we do not sell seed that has been genetically modified (GMO). Burpee has never bought or sold GMO seeds, and we have no intention of doing so in the future.” For more information on Burpee’s non-GMO policy, visit https://www.burpee.com/gardenadvicecenter/about/gmo-policy/nongmo-policy.html.
How do I donate seeds?
You may donate any leftover seeds that you purchase but they must come with the original packet so we can pass along the information to the next person. See Reference staff for assistance. And thank you!
