Summer Reading Tween Activities
All Tween activities are designed for kids ages 8 – 12 years old and are held in the John Clarke Children’s Program Room unless otherwise indicated. Registration is required for each program. Sign up at the Children’s Desk or over the phone (847-8720 ext. 204) beginning June 23rd.
Tuesday, July 8th @ 10:30am Explore the properties of electricity and creativity using conductive dough. Learn how circuits work and the difference between conductive and resistive materials. Use LED lights, play-dough and your imagination to create electric artwork. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Newport Public Library and is presented by the Rhode Island Museum of Science and Art.
MAKERSPACE SUMMER CAMP: “IMAGINE, DESIGN, CREATE”
Monday – Friday, July 14th – 18th – 9:00am – 12:00pm Learn how to use a 3D printer, vinyl cutter and heat press to bring your designs to life. Register for the entire week. Registration begins on May 31st. Held in the lower level program room. This program is made possible by a grant from the Office of Library and Information Services and the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Thursday, July 17th @ 2:30pm The Science of Nutrition – Fizz-licious! A hands-on lesson in creating your own nutritious soft drinks with delicious Rhode Island grown fruit. Participants are invited to bring an empty container of their favorite soft drink and explore the nutrition facts label as they learn about the content of their soft drink choices.
CREATIVE ENGINEERING: MARBLE ROLLER COASTER
Tuesday, July 29th @ 10:30am Explore the connection between potential and kinetic energy. Create marble roller coasters and send your marbles on loop-the-loops, spirals and more through over 6 feet of tubing. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Newport Public Library and is presented by the Rhode Island Museum of Science and Art.
