The Newport Public Library offers two book clubs for adults: the Tuesday Book Club, which meets at 1:00pm the second Tuesday of the month, and the Thursday Book Club, which meets the third Thursday at 7:00pm. You can read more about them below. We also offer a wonderful book club for children called Book Buddies, run by our Children’s Department. In Fall 2011, look for special Book Chats–book discussions where everyone reads whatever they want–on Wednesday evenings and Tuesday afternoons.

Tuesday Afternoon Book Club
In 2011 and 2012, our Tuesday group will be reading the works of Nobel Prize winners. Our list this year includes some of the biggest names in international literature, as well as non-fiction from a Nobel Prize-winning economist. We’ll begin on September 13 with Toni Morrison’s latest novel, A Mercy. Set in 17th century America, the novel takes a powerful look at the subjugation of Native Americans, women, servants, and slaves.
Tuesday Book Group Full Schedule
The Tuesday Book Club meets the second Tuesday of the month at 1:00pm in the Stride Room. No registration is required and all are welcome. Just read the book and come in ready to discuss. For more information contact Luke Owens at 847-8720 x208 or lowens at newportlibrary dot org.
Book Chat
We are continuing to offer Book Chats – an informal discussion of the book you are currently reading. No registration, no required book to read, no worries. Just come and talk (for 3 minutes) about whatever you’ve been reading or listening to lately. Library staff will moderate. To find out when the next Book Chat is being offered, check out the library’s Event Calendar.
Book Chats are a great way to get book recommendations, share the reading experience, and find out what the library’s collection has to offer. Here are lists of the books mentioned by participants in our summer book chats:
