Back issues of Newport newspapers at Newport Public Library

Newport Public Library provides back issues of the Newport Daily News and the Newport Mercury in print and microfilm. The library has bound volumes of back issues of the Newport Daily News from 1846 to 1971, and back issues of the Newport Mercury from 1835 to1965. The bound volumes are missing some years.

The Library also owns a complete microfilmed set of back issues of the Newport Daily News, from 1846 to the present, and an incomplete microfilmed set of back issues of the Newport Mercury, from 1829 to 1863. These microfilms can be viewed on two microfilm readers in the Library's Sargent Special Collections Room. Both microfilm readers will print copies for 25 cents a page (black and white only.)

The Library has created an in-house index to the Newport Daily News from 1986 to the present. This index can only be used in the library at this time. The index from 1998 on is automated, and can be searched on computers in the Adult Reference area.
